Trisodium EDTA is a salt of EDTA, a man-made chelating agent. A chelating agent is a molecule that grabs onto metal ions and holds them tightly. The sodium makes it dissolve easily in water, so it blends well into lotions, gels and sprays.

Formulators use it because metal ions are everywhere. Tap water, mineral pigments and some plant extracts can carry calcium, magnesium and iron. Left alone, these ions can cause cloudiness, odd textures or faster breakdown of other ingredients. By binding them, Trisodium EDTA helps the formula look and behave as intended. It has little scent, little color and usually leaves no noticeable feel on the skin.
