Tribehenin is made by combining glycerin with behenic acid, a long, straight fatty acid that is often plant-derived. Joining three of these fatty chains to one glycerin backbone creates a solid, wax-like ester.

Formulators use it to give lip care and mascara a firm structure without a greasy finish. Once applied, it feels smooth and soft rather than heavy. It also helps hold waxes and oils together, so the texture stays even in the tube.
