Cocoa butter comes from the seeds, or beans, of the cacao tree. The beans are roasted, crushed and pressed to separate the natural fat from the solids. The fat is then cooled and filtered into a pale, solid butter. It is firm at room temperature and melts close to body heat.

Formulators use it to add body and structure. It helps thicken creams, firm up lip balms and give lotions a rich, cushioned feel. As an emollient, a softening ingredient, it helps skin stay soft and helps reduce water loss from the surface. On skin it feels smooth and slightly waxy at first, then melts into a soft film.

Is cocoa butter the same as cocoa powder?

No. Cocoa powder is what remains after most of the fat is pressed out of the roasted beans. Cocoa butter is the separated fat itself. That is why the butter is rich and solid, while the powder is dry and fine.

Can cocoa butter feel heavy on oily skin?

It can. Cocoa butter is rich, so some people with oily or acne-prone skin find it feels heavy. Choosing a lighter lotion or using a smaller amount may suit better. Testing a small patch of skin first is a sensible step with any new product.
