Ingredient dictionary
A crosslinked form of sodium hyaluronate, the salt of hyaluronic acid. Its main job is to attract and hold water in a formula. It is on the label of 17 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar-based molecule that occurs naturally in skin. Most cosmetic versions are made by fermentation, then processed into a salt form called sodium hyaluronate. Chemists can link these chains together to create a crosspolymer, a larger network that holds onto water for longer.
Formulators use it because it helps a product feel hydrating without feeling heavy. The crosslinked form tends to give a soft, cushiony texture and smooth spreading. It is usually found in water-based serums and gels, where it can add body and help the formula feel light on the skin.
Good for
Suits serums and moisturizers for people who want a light, hydrating feel, including dry skin.
They are closely related. Hyaluronic acid is the parent molecule, and sodium hyaluronate is its salt form. The crosspolymer version is a linked, larger network of those chains. All three work in a similar way: they attract and hold water in a formula.
It can help dry skin feel softer and more comfortable because it holds water near the surface. It is a humectant, so it works best when a moisturizer or oil seals that water in.
