Polybutene starts as butene, a light gas from petroleum refining. Chemists link many butene units into long chains, making a clear, nearly odorless liquid that can range from thin to thick. Its structure is made only of carbon and hydrogen, and it is generally stable in formulas.

Formulators use polybutene for its tackiness and gloss. In lip gloss and lip care, it adds shine and a slightly cushioned, slick feel, and helps color stay where it is applied. In mascara, it helps form a flexible film that holds lashes together. On the skin or lips it feels tacky rather than greasy, so it is often blended with lighter oils or waxes.
