Microcrystalline Cellulose starts as plant fiber, most often from wood pulp. Producers treat the fiber with dilute acid, which breaks down the loose, non-crystalline parts and leaves behind short, tiny crystal-like pieces. The result is washed, dried and ground into a fine white powder.

Formulators use it because it adds body without dissolving. It does not melt into water or oil, so it stays evenly suspended as tiny particles. It can help keep powders loose, soak up a little oil, and give creams and makeup a soft, slightly matte feel. Because it is largely inert, meaning it does not react easily, it rarely interacts with other ingredients.
