What Helianthus Annuus Hybrid Oil does

  • Softens and smooths dry skin
  • Conditions hair and reduces frizz
  • Helps other ingredients spread evenly
  • Adds a light, nourishing feel

Sunflower oil is pressed or extracted from the seeds of the sunflower plant, Helianthus annuus. The word hybrid means the seed comes from a crossbred variety, bred to give a steady yield and a consistent oil profile. Most of the oil is made of fatty acids, the oil's building blocks, mainly oleic and linoleic acid. It also carries vitamin E.

Formulators use it because it is a soft, emollient (softening) oil that smooths the skin's surface and leaves a lighter feel than many heavier plant oils. It spreads easily, blends well with water-based and oil-based ingredients, and is widely used in lotions, creams, balms and hair products. Its feel can vary a little by batch and refining method.

Frequently asked questions

Is sunflower oil good for the skin?

For many people, yes. It is a light plant oil that softens dry skin and helps it hold on to moisture. It is generally well tolerated, but anyone with a known sunflower allergy should skip it.

Is sunflower oil comedogenic?

It is generally considered low for pore-clogging, so many people with oily skin use it without problems. Reactions still vary from person to person, so a patch test is wise.
