A synthetic glycol that softens skin and helps keep water-based formulas fresh by boosting other preservatives. It is on the label of 3 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
Decylene Glycol is a man-made ingredient. It belongs to a group called alkanediols, which are small molecules with two hydroxyl groups (oxygen and hydrogen pairs that attract water) on a chain of ten carbon atoms. Manufacturers make it through chemical processing rather than extracting it straight from plants.
Formulators use it for a few reasons. It can help other preservatives do their job, so a product stays fresh for longer. It also has a light, slippery feel that helps a formula spread smoothly. It is clear and fast-absorbing, so it fits into many lotions and serums without a greasy finish.
Good for
Suits water-based lotions, creams and serums that need extra protection against microbe growth.
It has some action of its own against microbes, but it is mainly used as a helper. It boosts other preservatives in a formula, which can help keep water-based products fresh. Many formulas use it alongside a main preservative.
It is generally well tolerated. Still, any ingredient can bother sensitive skin, so test new products on a small area first. Stop using a product if you notice redness, itching or stinging.
