What Coconut Acid does

Coconut Acid comes from coconut oil. The oil's fats are split into their parts, called fatty acids, and the mix that results is coconut acid. Most of it is lauric acid, with smaller amounts of myristic, caprylic and capric acids. The exact blend can vary a little from batch to batch.

Formulators use it mainly because it can be turned into a soap. When mixed with an alkali, the acids form soap salts that clean and foam. The fatty acids also add body and a creamy feel. In shaving creams, that helps build a thick lather that cushions the skin. Some people with sensitive skin find that soap-based cleansers feel drying, so it is worth a patch test.

Frequently asked questions

Is coconut acid the same as coconut oil?

Not exactly. Coconut oil is the whole fat. Coconut acid is the fatty acid part of that oil, separated out for use as a building block. It is still coconut-derived, but its job in a formula is different, mostly cleansing, lathering and body.

Can coconut acid irritate sensitive skin?

Most people tolerate it well. Fatty acid soaps can feel drying on some skin, though, especially with frequent use. If your skin is sensitive, test a small area first and stop if you notice redness or stinging.
