What Cetrimonium Chloride does

  • Softens hair and smooths the cuticle
  • Reduces static and flyaways
  • Helps oil and water blend
  • Makes wet hair easier to detangle

Cetrimonium Chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound. It is made by linking a long fatty chain, called a cetyl chain, to a positively charged nitrogen group. Hair and skin tend to carry a slight negative charge, so the positive end is drawn to them. Formulators use it as a conditioning agent, an antistatic agent and an emulsifier that helps oil and water mix.

In a conditioner, it coats each strand lightly, which makes hair feel softer and easier to comb. It helps calm static flyaways, especially on dry or fine hair. Most of it is rinsed away, though leave-in products keep more on the hair. While wet, it usually feels slippery and silky.

Good for

Suits most hair types, especially dry or frizzy hair, in rinse-off conditioners and leave-in products.

Be careful if

Nothing in particular for most skin types.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cetrimonium Chloride bad for hair?

No, it is widely used and generally well tolerated. It can leave a light coating that weighs fine hair down if used heavily. Rinsing well keeps that effect minimal. People with very sensitive scalps may notice some itching.

Is Cetrimonium Chloride the same as cetyl alcohol?

No. Cetyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol that makes creams feel rich and thick. Cetrimonium Chloride is a different molecule that uses a similar fatty chain, but it carries a positive charge. That charge is why it clings to hair and works as a conditioner.
