What Carbomer does

  • Thickens water-based formulas
  • Creates a smooth gel texture
  • Keeps oil and water blended
  • Helps particles stay evenly spread

Carbomer is a synthetic polymer, built by linking acrylic acid molecules into a large, lightly cross-linked network. In water, it starts out acidic and barely thickens. Once a small amount of base is added to neutralize it, the network swells and turns into a clear gel.

Formulators use it because a small amount thickens a lot, so products feel thick and smooth without heavy oils. It also helps keep oil and water droplets from separating, which keeps lotions and sunscreens stable over time. On skin and hair it feels clear, smooth and light, and it leaves no greasy film.

Good for

Suits gels, lotions and creams that need a light, smooth, non-greasy feel.

Be careful if

Nothing in particular for most skin types.

Frequently asked questions

Is carbomer safe for skin?

Carbomer is widely used in skincare and is generally well tolerated. It is a thickener, not an active ingredient, so it is not meant to change skin on its own. If your skin is sensitive, check the full ingredient list and patch test new products.

Does carbomer make skin feel sticky?

Usually not. Carbomer forms a clear, light gel, and it leaves a smooth finish rather than an oily one. Feel depends on the whole formula. Some gels with carbomer feel slightly tacky at first, so testing a small amount is a good idea.
