Also listed as: Candelilla Wax, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax
Candelilla wax is a hard, plant-based wax taken from a desert shrub. Its main job is to give products body, structure, and a firm stick shape. It is on the label of 19 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
Candelilla wax comes from the candelilla shrub, a plant that grows in dry areas of northern Mexico and southwestern Texas. The wax is made by boiling the plant in acidified water. As the mixture cools, the wax rises to the surface and is collected. Refiners then purify it for cosmetic use.
Formulators like candelilla because it is much firmer than many other waxes, so a small amount can help a stick hold its shape. It also helps keep oil and water phases stable and leaves a smooth, slightly glossy film on the skin. You will often see it in sunscreen sticks and some shampoos.
Good for
Good for people who prefer plant-based ingredients and for solid products such as sticks and balms.
Yes, candelilla wax comes from a plant rather than from animals, so it is generally considered suitable for vegan formulas. Still, check the full ingredient list, since other ingredients in a product may come from animal sources.
No. Beeswax comes from bees, while candelilla comes from a shrub. Candelilla is harder and more brittle, so formulators often use it in smaller amounts than beeswax to get a similar firm texture.
