Bentonite

Bentonite is a soft clay made mostly of montmorillonite, formed from weathered volcanic ash. Its main job is to absorb oil and dirt and to thicken a formula. It is on the label of 4 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.

What Bentonite does

  • Absorbs excess oil and surface dirt
  • Thickens and gives a creamy texture
  • Helps keep particles evenly suspended

Bentonite comes from volcanic ash that has slowly changed over long periods, mostly into montmorillonite. It is mined, then purified and milled into a fine powder. Its particles are plate-like and carry a slight electrical charge, which lets them grab oil and dirt.

When mixed with water, bentonite swells and forms a smooth gel, so formulators use it to thicken cleansers and to hold other ingredients evenly in the mix. On skin, it feels soft and creamy, then leaves a light, slightly tight feel as it dries and is rinsed away.

Good for

Suits oily and combination skin, and cleansers meant to lift surface oil and dirt.

Frequently asked questions

Is bentonite safe for skin?

For most people, yes. Bentonite is a long-used cosmetic clay and is generally well tolerated. Because it pulls oil from the surface, it can feel drying if left on too long or used often. If your skin is sensitive, patch test first and rinse well.

Does bentonite clay help oily skin?

It is often used in cleansers for oily and combination skin because it absorbs excess oil and loose dirt from the surface. It does not change how much oil skin makes over time. Pairing it with a gentle moisturizer keeps skin comfortable afterward.
