Arginine is one of the twenty standard amino acids, the small molecules that link together to form proteins. Proteins in your hair and skin contain it. Most cosmetic arginine is made by fermentation, a process much like the one used for many other amino acids. Formulators use it for two main reasons. It helps condition hair, and it can raise a product's pH and balance out acidic ingredients.

You will mostly see arginine in shampoos, conditioners, hair color and leave-in products, where it often sits in smaller amounts. It is also used in some skincare for hydration. It is a white powder that dissolves easily in water, so it blends well into water-based formulas.
