What Aqua does

Aqua is simply water. Before it goes into a product, it is purified, often by removing minerals and microbes, so the formula stays clean and stable. Water alone does not protect a product from microbes, so water-based formulas also contain preservatives.

Formulators use aqua because it is inexpensive, easy to handle, and dissolves many useful ingredients, from humectants to salts. It often makes up a large share of creams, gels and cleansers, and it shapes how light or rich a product feels. As it evaporates on skin, it leaves a cool, fresh feeling, which is why water-based products usually feel light.
