Formulators use acetic acid mainly to adjust pH, the measure of how acidic or basic a product is. Shampoos and hair color often need a slightly acidic range to stay stable, and a small amount can help get there. In finished products it is usually present in small amounts and rarely noticed.

Is acetic acid the same as vinegar?

Not quite. Vinegar is a diluted form of acetic acid, mixed with water and small amounts of other natural compounds. Beauty products use acetic acid as a single, measured ingredient, mainly for pH control, so the two are related but not the same.

Does acetic acid cause irritation?

At the low levels used in finished shampoos and hair color, it is generally well tolerated. People with very sensitive skin may still notice a tingle, especially with products left on the skin. If a product stings or feels uncomfortable, rinse well and stop using it.
