Ingredient dictionary
3-Octadecanediol is a long-chain diol, an alcohol with two hydroxyl (OH) groups on an 18-carbon chain. It is used mainly to condition skin and help a formula feel smooth. It is on the label of 2 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
3-Octadecanediol belongs to the long-chain alcohol family. Its 18-carbon backbone is similar in length to the chains in many natural fats and oils, so it sits well with oily ingredients. Its two hydroxyl groups, small water-attracting parts, also help it blend with the water-based parts of a formula.
Formulators use it for its conditioning feel and its ability to help ingredients spread and stay evenly mixed. It is most often seen in leave-in products and in acne-focused formulas, where it is one part of a wider mix. Its feel depends on how much is used and what else is in the formula, so it can range from light to richer.
Good for
Suits people who want a smoothing, conditioning ingredient in leave-in care products.
It appears often in acne-focused products, but that does not show what it does in any one formula. It is a conditioning ingredient, not a medicine. For ongoing breakouts, a dermatologist can suggest treatments that have good evidence for acne.
Stearyl alcohol is also a long-chain fatty alcohol, but it has one hydroxyl group. 3-Octadecanediol has two. That extra group can change how it mixes and feels, so the two are not interchangeable in every formula.
